Q. When & why was the Office of Black Ministry, of the Archdiocese of New York, established?

A. Established in 1976, the Office of Black Ministry (OBM) was created to address some of the unique spiritual, cultural and social needs of African American, African, and Caribbean American Catholics, as well as the larger Black Community.

A. The Mission of the Office of Black Ministry to listen to and promote the aspirations of Black Catholics; to encourage self-reliance, cultural identity, economic self-sufficiency, and spiritual growth; and to work towards the eradication of racism and discrimination, and any and all forms of injustice that may exist within the Church and society.

Q. Who is Venerable Pierre Toussaint?

A. Venerable Pierre Toussaint was born a slave in Haiti and died a freeman in New York City. He is credited by many with being the father of Catholic Charities in New York.
